Repairs
Custom Amps
Home
I recently had the opportunity to restore a rough looking classic from
Gibson. The GA-50T was the top of the line when it was introduced. I spent
a good bit of time restoring this piece to it former glory. The electronics and
cabinet were completely restored. Click on the pictures of the completed
project to see larger images. Descriptions are below the pics. Honestly, the
pictures don't do this amp justice.

When I received the amp the chassis had been the home of a family of mice,
the cabinet was broken apart and nailed together, and the rear panel was
missing. The tube compliment was also incorrect. Amazingly, it still had the
original speakers.

Missing piece of wood in the bottom
corner, incorrect handle, nails and screws
holding cabinet together are visible around
the edges.
Side view shows the cabinet split apart.
Same problem on the other side and bottom.
More missing wood visible in the lower left
corner, some incorrect tubes, conduit
straps screwed to the back to wrap the
power original 61 year old power cord.
Missing layer of plywood visible on the left. No fabric
covering left at all on the bottom.
Covering material removed, cabinet completely
disassembled.
Broken area on plywood bottom panel was
cleaned off with a router and patched with a
matcing piece of wood. The string groove was
cut after the patch was sanded.
Cabinet reassembled and covered. I had to
apply the dark "Lifton" style pattern myself
since this covering has been unavailable for
years.
Rear showing the newly fabricated back panel
that was made to replace the missing original
back panel.
Cleaned and electronically restored chassis installed, new 5V4 rectifier,
6L6 power tubes and 6SJ7 tubes. The brown wire exiting the cabinet on
the right goes to the tremolo footswitch just out of frame. The 8" speaker
was also re-coned. I have omitted photos of the electronic restoration.
